Jóhanna av Steinum is a fashion knitwear designer from the Faroe Islands – a small group of islands in the North Atlantic Sea, famous for having twice as many sheep as people and a strong tradition for knitting. Jóhanna was raised in this tradition, sitting on the lap of her 7 knitting aunties – and 1 knitting uncle.

In 2001 Jóhanna came to London where she worked in the fashion industry and studied  at London College of Fashion and later at Central Saint Martin’s where she graduated in 2007. She then continued to work at Central Saint Martin’s, first as a knitwear technician and later teaching her own students at BA (hons) level.

Jóhanna av Steinum designs and produces handmade luxury knitwear garments under the label Steinum. She often finds her inspiration from Faroese traditional knitting patterns and techniques or just from the Faroese way of living. The style of the Steinum garments is high fashion and high quality with a unique, colourful and positive feel and with a childish but “tongue in cheek” edge.

As well as producing her own label, Steinum is working as a freelance designer, and is currently collaborating with Faroese wool wear label “Sirri” where she has designed a wide range of knitted and woven garments for men, women and children currently on sale in many countries.
